Most cash crop and food crop commodities travel a complicated journey from farms to plate/cup and there is urgent need to improve transparency in these supply chains.
The need to develop traceability systems is essential to allow suppliers measure and improve important sustainability aspects of their operations relative to Ghana's agro ecological zones enrichment. Also, such platforms could serve as verifiable data sources for Ghana's food stock in situations where food supply chains could be potentially disrupted like the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
We believe traceability systems should be robust, effective and efficient. We thus propose a 5-step process:
1/ Develop a risk screening process by location
2/ Identify farms and capture farm polygons
3/ Build an efficient tracking system that allows identification of suppliers with issues on sustainability
4/ Design and build a dynamic dashboard containing all relevant sustainability key performance indicators ( KPIs)
5/ Traceability solutions should be locally-driven, locally-built and locally-maintained for longevity. Ghana's ICT sector has an existing deep competency.
These pointers should be considered when developing a long-term view of traceability solutions in Ghana.
