Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), an African-based partnership-driven institution brings to you monthly editions of the Food Security Monitor Report. The report provides a unilateral focus on African agriculture, food trade, and food and nutrition.
In the April 2021 Food Security Monitor, there is focus on a number of key issues including food trade, COVID-19, commodity prices, desert locusts and rain patterns.
Key highlights from this edition include:
- Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and South Sudan being identified as food insecure.
- Trade restrictions between Kenya and Uganda leading to an increase in illicit and informal trade activities between the two countries.
- Above normal rainfall being predicted in East and West Africa, even as it declines in Southern Africa, allowing for the harvesting of seasonal crops.
- The possibility of the widespread April rains resulting in desert locust swarms maturing, leading Ethiopia and Kenya to experience egg-laying, hatching and band formation in May.
